Why is Duct Sealing Important?

You probably don’t think about your home’s ductwork very much. It does its job quietly and out of the way, and you have more important things to worry about. Yet, you’d probably be surprised to learn how much energy is lost in the typical home due to leaky ducts. Indoor air quality can be hurt by duct leaks, too. This is why effective, professional duct sealing is crucial.

What’s the Harm in Leaky Ducts?

  • Energy loss – Ductwork plays an important role in your home by delivering conditioned air to every room. If your ducts are leaking, either because of deterioration over time or shoddy installation, a lot of that cooled or heated air won’t reach its destination. It’s not unusual for a residence to lose as much as 30 percent of its conditioned air from leaky ducts. This forces your HVAC equipment to work harder to reach the desired thermostat setting. It wastes energy, stresses parts, and leads to more repairs and a shorter service life.
  • Poor indoor air quality – Often, when ducts leak, unbalanced air pressure can result in dirty air being sucked into the ductwork as the ducts run through unconditioned areas such as crawl spaces, basements, attics and wall cavities. That dirty air gets circulated into the home, potentially triggering or exacerbating allergies and other respiratory disorders in vulnerable family members.

Professional Duct Sealing or Do-It-Yourself?

While handy homeowners can seal accessible ducts, a trained HVAC professional can ensure that all ductwork throughout the home is safe from leaks. A technician can run tests to ascertain the extent of the air leakage and has the tools and know-how to access hard-to-reach ductwork. In addition, a comprehensive inspection should determine whether your ducts need to be cleaned as well. To seal the ducts, the technician will use a combination of mastic and metal-backed tape. They won’t make the mistake of using standard duct tape since it tends to lose its adhesiveness over time.
