What to Know About Washable Air Filters

How to Stay Safe While Working in Your Attic

Changing your air filter on a regular basis is an essential part of keeping your HVAC system healthy. Nearly every furnace and air conditioner comes with a filter that has to be thrown away after its used up, but washable air filters offer a compelling and potentially cost-saving alternative to the typical disposable air filter.

What Washable Air Filters Offer

Unlike disposable air filters, washable air filters can be used over and over again with just a simple washing. Since you can use the same air filter repeatedly, you won’t have to run out to the store just to get another filter or keep stacks of air filters nearby just in case. In most cases, you’ll only need water and a mild detergent to clean your washable air filter.

A washable air filter offers plenty of other advantages over its disposable counterpart, but there are also a few downsides to consider before buying one.

Pros:

  • Long life when properly cleaned and maintained
  • Tremendous savings over disposable filters throughout its lifespan
  • Environmentally friendlier than a typical disposable filter

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost than a typical disposable filter
  • Not as effective at filtering particles as a disposable filter
  • Susceptible to mold and mildew when damp

Remember that the majority of washable filters have a MERV rating of 1 to 4 – the same as the most basic disposable fiberglass air filter. If you’re looking for an air filter that can trap more airborne pollutants and improve indoor air quality, you’re better off using a disposable filter with a higher MERV rating.
