How HVAC System Components Impact Each Other

Although it’s referred to by a single acronym, your HVAC system is comprised of different components that all work together to regulate temperature, humidity and air quality in your home. Because they’re interconnected, malfunctions with any of the following HVAC system components can have a direct impact on the system as a whole.


This is the command center of your HVAC system. Sensors in the thermostat monitor the indoor temperature, so it can signal the heating and cooling equipment to cycle on and off based on the settings you choose.


Forced-air systems have two sets of ducts — supply ducts that deliver conditioned air to each room, and return ducts that bring stale air back for reconditioning. These ducts are shared by the heating and cooling equipment, and to function properly, they must be sized correctly, then sealed and insulated to stop air leaks and energy losses.

Air Handler Unit

This centrally-located unit houses your air conditioner’s evaporator coil that circulates refrigerant to pull out heat and moisture and cool the air. It also contains the furnace burner and heat exchanger used to heat your home. The blower fan that creates air movement through the system is also found here, as well as an air filter to capture debris particles. Various issues can develop with these components:

  • Dirt buildup on the evaporator coil can erode cooling efficiency, humidity control and comfort.
  • Corrosion or cracks in the heat exchanger can allow hazardous combustion fumes to escape into your air supply.
  • A clogged filter can restrict system airflow and impact energy efficiency, the performance and reliability of the different components, and your indoor air quality.

Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit contains two vital cooling system components — the condenser coil that transfers heat to the outdoor air, and the compressor that pumps refrigerant through the system. Restricted airflow in the outdoor unit can decrease the HVAC system’s efficiency and its ability to keep your home comfortably cool.
