Getting out of the house for a weekend, a full week, or even longer is a wonderful idea now that vacation season has finally arrived. It would be a shame if your energy costs skyrocketed while you were gone, so we’ve compiled a few simple tasks to add to you HVAC vacation checklist before you leave.
Hire an HVAC Technician
Before you leave on vacation, you should definitely give your HVAC technician a call. In fact, you should schedule an annual inspection and maintenance appointment to keep your systems running effectively and efficiently.
Check Your Air Filter
Although it might seem like a simple task, checking the filter in your air conditioner prior to going on vacation is absolutely critical. If you don’t, then your filter could very well get clogged up with dirt and debris while you’re gone, which will negatively affect the operation of your system. Take a look right before you leave and replace it, if necessary.
Turn Up the Temperature
Even if you have pets or plants in your home, it won’t hurt to turn up the temperature of your thermostat while you’re gone as long as you don’t turn it up too much. A reasonable temperature is typically somewhere between 80 and 85 degrees. This will help you conserve energy without warming up your home to intolerable levels.
Draw the Curtains and Blinds
When you go on vacation, it’s always best to close all of your blinds and your curtains so that nefarious types can’t see into your home. But, this is also a great way to keep the heat out by blocking the sun’s rays. If you want to go one step further, you could always pick up some blackout curtains and hang them up over any areas where the sun tends to come through.
