Buying a New Air Conditioner

Buying a New Air Conditioner

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioner, you may be aware of the dizzying number of options available to you. However, there are a few things you can keep in mind if you want to be guided to the right choice for your Monmouth County home. Ask yourself these questions before deciding on a unit:

What is the air conditioner’s efficiency?

Simply put, high-efficiency units offer more cooling power for less energy expenditure. That means that throughout the cooling season, you’re spending fewer energy dollars on keeping your home comfortable. High-efficiency units may come with a higher initial price tag, but they can pay for themselves in lifetime cooling bill savings, and there may be tax credits or other incentives available to help you pay.

Have you shopped around for an HVAC specialist as well as a new air conditioner?

Getting your new A/C expertly installed can be as important as selecting the right unit. In fact, proper installation is so important that some A/C warranties will be automatically voided if your contractors don’t meet certain specifications. Ask for estimates and testimonials, and make sure the HVAC service experts you choose are willing to answer any questions you may have.

Will you sign an ongoing maintenance contract?

Your A/C experiences periods of heavy use, intercut with periods when it sits idle for months. That kind of use means that ongoing maintenance is a must, if you want your unit to work well year after year. A maintenance contract can keep your unit working at peak efficiency, and lower the chance that you’ll have to face costly repairs.

Has your home been evaluated and sized correctly?

At minimum, you should make sure that you’re getting an A/C sized to your home’s cooling load. However, if you’re in the market for a new A/C, you might consider a home energy audit to really overhaul your home HVAC comfort.
