5 Easy Summer HVAC Maintenance Tips

Your HVAC system can send your energy bills through the roof if you don’t maintain it properly. Proper maintenance helps the system run more efficiently and avoid emergency breakdowns through the heat of the summer. Here are some simple summer HVAC maintenance tips that will help you keep your home cool while saving energy and money:

Clean/Replace the Air Filter

If you can only do one maintenance chore this summer, it should be changing your disposable filter or cleaning your washable one. Doing so can reduce the energy your air conditioning system uses by as much as 15 percent. Be sure to clean or replace your air filter every month during the summer.

Examine Your Thermostat

Check the thermostat to ensure it’s working correctly and maintaining the desired temperature. If you’re currently using a mechanical type thermostat, consider switching to a programmable one, which allows you to automate different temperature settings throughout the day and save energy. For instance, you could set a higher temperature when no one’s around and reduce it before you arrive home in the evening.

Seal Ductwork and Open Spaces

Air leaks cause energy loss and downgrade comfort. Make sure your windows, doors, HVAC ducts and any other openings in your home are properly sealed.

Clear the Area around Your Outdoor Unit

Trim any plants around your outdoor A/C unit and clear away any dirt and debris. Ideally, you should have two feet of clear space around your unit so it can freely pull in air.

Call In a Professional

While you can do several maintenance tasks yourself, some can only be done by someone who has been professionally trained. Call an HVAC technician for professional A/C maintenance. Some of the tasks the technician will do include clearing the drain and cleaning the fan blades and indoor evaporator coil.

By taking the above steps, you’ll not only prevent your energy bills from getting out of control but also extend the life of your HVAC equipment. For more useful tips on HVAC maintenance, contact us at Aggressive Mechanical Contractors. We proudly serve the Central New Jersey area.
