Who are you going to get to install your new HVAC system? You might be thinking of looking online. There are plenty of ads for handymen who are quick and cheap — but can you trust them? Here’s why you should only use a vetted professional when hiring an HVAC technician.
Avoid Getting Scammed
Plenty of “experts” advertise on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, claiming they can fix or install your HVAC system for much cheaper than you’d ordinarily pay. These technicians are drastically underqualified, and they are often actually scam artists. They’ll take your money and do a third-rate job that will just have to be redone by someone more skilled — at a much greater cost than if you’d hired that person to begin with.
For instance, before installing your HVAC system, the technician needs to make sure it’s the correct size. It takes special training to do it properly. An untrained technician who doesn’t use Manual J could give you the wrong-size unit for your home, which wastes energy, wears out quickly, and can’t get your home comfortable.
What to Look For
When hiring an HVAC technician, first make sure they’re NATE-certified. That means they’ve been tested by North American Technician Excellence and have the necessary skills and expertise in HVAC work to do the job properly. Ask for proof of insurance as well.
Next, look at their experience. Do they know the most current installation and repair techniques? Are they familiar with the latest HVAC technology? Ask for references too. Talk to past clients and look up reviews online to see what other people’s experiences have been.
Finally, get an estimate in writing from at least two or three different HVAC companies. Compare their prices so you can tell if one is astronomically high or if another seems too good to be true. Vetting your technician takes a bit of work, but it’s well worth it for a job well done — the first time.
